Terms of Service

Last updated: 2026-05-24

1) Service scope

Sjo is a taste portrait stored for your account, updated through conversation. Output is automated — not legal, financial, tax, medical, or therapeutic advice.

The service may be accessed from many countries. These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy, govern your use regardless of where you access Sjo from.

2) Subscriptions, billing, cancellation, and refunds

Paid access is managed through Stripe recurring subscriptions. Billing cadence, renewal, and cancellation follow your checkout/subscription settings and applicable law.

Refund policy

  • Statutory rights where they apply are not limited by this summary.
  • Where we offer discretionary refunds beyond the law, both must be true: the request falls within 14 days of purchase activation on the membership, and the account has logged fewer than 20 qualifying chat turns (exchanges) since that activation. A qualifying chat turn is one main chat exchange we process for your account; we log this usage for entitlement and abuse prevention, and profile or background processing does not count toward the limit.
  • To request a refund assessment or ask about eligibility, use the contact form below or the Support page — include the email on your Sjo account.
  • Your profile shows a live estimate when purchase timing is on your membership record (day count and qualifying chat turns since activation). If timing is not visible yet, these rules still govern how requests are assessed.
  • Founding status and price lock are forfeited upon refund, cancellation, or revocation for breach — see section 3.

3) Founding member commitments

Founding member price lock fixes your recurring subscription rate at the price active on your account at the time of founding enrollment, for the specific tier purchased. This lock applies indefinitely for as long as your subscription remains active and in good standing.

Founding status and the associated price lock are personal to you and non-transferable — they cannot be passed to another person or account.

Founding status and price lock are permanently forfeited upon cancellation, refund, or revocation for breach of these Terms. Once forfeited, founding status cannot be reinstated and the founding price cannot be reapplied to any new or existing subscription.

In the event of service discontinuation or tier discontinuation, Sjo will, at its discretion, either: (a) migrate eligible founding members to a comparable successor tier at their locked founding price, preserving the price lock on the new tier; or (b) provide a pro-rata refund for the unused portion of the current billing period. Sjo will give reasonable advance notice of discontinuation where possible and communicate which option applies.

A migration under (a) does not constitute cancellation and does not forfeit founding status or the associated price lock.

4) Acceptable use

  • No abuse, fraud, scraping, reverse engineering, or unauthorized automation.
  • No attempts to re-identify, reverse engineer, or reconstruct anonymized or aggregated datasets.
  • No use for illegal activity or rights violations.
  • No attempts to bypass security, rate limits, or payment controls.

5) Personal data, GDPR, and privacy

Sjo is operated from Sweden and processes personal data under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and applicable Swedish law. Your taste portrait — including preferences, anchors, and conversation-derived signals — is personal data linked to your account.

We process personal data on these bases, as applicable:

  • Contract (GDPR Art. 6(1)(b)) — to provide the service, manage your account, billing, and entitlements.
  • Legitimate interests (Art. 6(1)(f)) — security, abuse prevention, reliability, and proportionate product improvement, balanced against your rights.
  • Consent (Art. 6(1)(a)) — where required, including separate opt-in for model-training use of conversations and non-essential cookies (see Privacy and Cookie policies).
  • Legal obligation (Art. 6(1)(c)) — accounting, tax, and compliance retention where the law requires it.

Retention periods, processors, international transfers, and category-level detail are in our Privacy Policy. In summary: portrait and conversation-derived profile data are kept while your account is active and deleted on verified account deletion request, except where law requires longer retention (for example billing records).

Where GDPR applies, you have the right to access, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection, and data portability. Signed-in members can use Profile data-rights controls (JSON export and account deletion) where available; you may also contact us via the form below. You may lodge a complaint with the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection (IMY) or your local supervisory authority in the EEA.

6) Account suspension and termination

You may stop using Sjo at any time and cancel paid subscriptions through Stripe or your account billing settings, subject to applicable law and the refund terms above.

We may suspend or terminate access immediately if we reasonably believe you breached these Terms, engaged in fraud or abuse, posed a security risk, or if we must do so to comply with law or a competent authority request. Where practical, we will give notice; we may act without prior notice when delay would cause harm or is legally required.

On termination, your right to use the service ends. Handling of personal data after closure follows the Privacy Policy(including deletion on request and legal-retention exceptions). Provisions that by nature should survive (including liability limits where enforceable, IP, governing law, and disputes) remain in effect.

7) Liability limitations

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, Sjo is provided on an as-is and as-available basis, with no guarantee of uninterrupted availability or error-free outputs. You remain responsible for final decisions.

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability that cannot be excluded or limited under mandatory law. If you are a consumer in the EU/EEA (including Sweden), statutory consumer rights apply and may override clauses that would otherwise be unenforceable against you — including broad disclaimers of quality or remedies where your local law does not permit them.

8) Disputes, governing law, and jurisdiction

Contact us first via the form below (or Support) so we can try to resolve billing, access, or data concerns informally.

These Terms are governed by the laws of Sweden, without regard to conflict-of-law rules that would require another country's law. Courts in Stockholm, Sweden have non-exclusive jurisdiction over disputes arising from or relating to these Terms or the service, except where mandatory law gives you the right to bring proceedings in your country of habitual residence (for example as an EEA consumer).

We do not require binding arbitration. Chargebacks and payment disputes with your card issuer or Stripe follow their processes; we may provide records needed to investigate in good faith.

9) Intellectual property and portrait ownership

Your taste portrait and preference data are yours: they are part of your account data, you can inspect and remove supported fields directly in your profile where the product exposes controls, and Sjo claims no ownership stake in those preferences themselves. You grant Sjo only the limited rights necessary to operate and improve the service as described in the Privacy Policy. Sjo retains all rights to the platform software, product experience, trademarks, aggregated non-identifying analytics, and any models or tooling we create.
